I still don't like the idea of Harriet Miers as a Supreme Court justice, but I must say that if these people and organizations are arguing for her withdrawal, there must be something good about her!

Wow. Peggy Noonan is opposed? I disagree with Noonan on issues a lot, but I tend to have a lot of respect for her. She's not an extreme conservative by any stretch of the imagination, and tends to be very, very idealistic view of things. That's one of the more damning objections I've seen, actually. (Similarly, although Bork is a crackmonkey, he's a damn smart little crackmonkey)

It could also be a ruse: object to Miers so that they can ram an even worse candidate in the slot or to fool Dems into accepting her.

In the first case, why nominate her in the first place. In the second, why bother with the ruse - they have a majority and can confirm her. Either way, it seems to depend on an excess of conspiracy for a deficit of useful result.

It's my firm opinion that that's a clever PR ploy to get us liberals to want her in.

(And by "firm", I mean it crossed my mind that it would be a very sneaky and way too coordinated thing for them to do.)

He's how I think of it:

Aside from his views on Israel, Michael Moore and I agree on a lot of things. We both thought that going into Iraq would be a bad idea, and for pretty much the same reasons. We are both disappointed with the performance of the current administration. We both feel that banning loud music will not lead to a decrease in gun violence, but that stronger gun control laws will.

That said, I'm kind of embarrassed to have Moore on my side. He's loud and obnoxious when neither of those things is called for, and tends to make huge and indefensible logical leaps in his accusations when he doesn't even need to. I don't think Fahrenheit 9/11 won a single Bush supporter over to the anti-Bush side — you had to go in hating him or you weren't going to pay any attention.

(That Michael Moore is a popular figure in France says volumes about the animosity of the French toward our current president, given that Moore is pretty much the distillation of all the things about Americans that tend to rub Europeans the wrong way.)

I think they're worried that Miers is going to be their Michael Moore.
