Hamlet in Purgatory is one of my most favorite academic books, ever.

That was brilliant.

Although I think the United States must be going slowly insane, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report have had some of my favorite segments ever in the past week. And both tied to literature!

Might I hazard a guess at the second being Jon's Lord of the Flies rant from a few days back?

Right in one!

If only Jon Stewart holding the conch really did make Congress get to work....

...the Palin-Bottom comparison is the BEST THING EVER.

Other than, you know, the McCain/Macbeth.

I can't watch video at work, but that is one of the greatest sentences I've ever seen.

Just wait until you do get to see the video. It will fill your heart with gladness.

Oh, that was awesome! It took like 3 tries for me to get it to load and play, and I'm glad I was persistant. *g*

Does this mean I need a "Vote for Hamlet" button?

I was actually watching this with my friends after the debate, I heard "Stephen Greenblatt" and I started jumping up at down... much to the confusion of everyone else in the room.

He's a celebrity to us! I'm reminded of the time my family laughed at me for referring to a visiting professor as a "famous Anglo-Normannist." The professor in question is famous, if you're one of the five hundred (to be generous) people in the world who know anything about Anglo-Norman!

This reminds me of the time I was trying to explain to my mom who Peter Brown was and I used the term "rock star of late antiquity". Funny looks from all around.

I wish Colbert had let Greenblatt actually answer the question of whether he sees the McCain/Macbeth parallel, because it sounded like he (G.) had a different one in mind, and I would have liked to hear it.

Also . . . Will in the World came out some time ago, rather odd to be mentioning it now?

But overall: five stars.

Yes, Colbert was talking more than he could have, and Greenblatt could indeed have said more. Still funny, anyway.
