Skimming over a fairly dated analysis of Beowulf written by a crusty male professor in the 1960s, I came across this phrase:

“Professor Tolkien is immensely attractive”

I said to myself, “I knew it!” before I stopped and realized that the previous line of text ended “This theory of”.

Elsewhere on the same page, the same critic talks about “Tolkien’s sensitive theory.”

Your theory... so sensitive.

Leave me alone. I need something to amuse me while I'm buried in the bowels of the library with sixteen books, five articles and a laptop, don’t I?

***

Meanwhile, I favor education as much as or significantly more than the next person. When I saw signs posted around my campus reading “Fast 4 Education,” therefore, I decided that the people who posted the signs needed to be educated on the difference between “For” and “4”. Apparently, the same group recently held a “March 4 Education,” and no one has corrected them yet. I shall have to find the address of the education activists and write them a letter. Proper communication is so important, don’t you think?

I can so see the slash!potential in that.

Given the type of author I'm fairly sure wrote the article, I don't think I actually want to see the slash potential...

(giggle) (snort) (imagines unseemly wisps of thought rising into the air above Rymenhild's carrel)

Hey! That subtext was for my AU! Catch it! Don't let it get away!

There's always more subtext. It's an inexhaustible river.

I'm pretty sure they're just using "4" in a colloquial, attention-grabbing sense. Sort of like a typographical slang. Still, I guess it would be worth writing out the phrase in proper English.

I would have no problem with a March 4 Racial Equality or some such thing. The difficulty is that the cause being advertised is education...

It also seems that "March 4" is particularly ridiculous advertising slogan because it looks like a date.

Bwahahaahaha.. *snort* sensitive..

Did any of you know I was Edith Tolkein in a former life? (Its entirely possible, I mean, she died in 1971)

This explains my love for elder statesmen with British accents..

They would have to be mumbling absentminded overly conservative elder statesment with British accents.

Well, of course. If their audience could tell the difference between "for" and "4," they wouldn't need to be marching, would they?

That said, they would probably just call it a space-saving pun. Though if Bush subsequently declares the 4th of March to be Education Day, I'll stand corrected.

It doesn't save all that much space.

And if Bush has the opportunity to declare another 4th of March anything, I will be Exceedingly Upset.
