Hello!

I am back from a seven-day period with absolutely no Internet access. Family vacation was lovely, restful, and unquestionably good for my arms. I read (well, re-read) quite a bit of Malory, as well as a Chaim Potok novel (The Book of Lights) I'd somehow neglected during my Potok period in high school and Naomi Novik's first Temeraire books. I also did lots of pencil puzzles. Life is good.

Of course, if anything interesting happened on LJ between last Friday and today, I've missed it. Send links to important posts, plot-heavy Milliways moments, or anything else you think I want to know.

You will be interested in this, I think, as it is related to your icon. *cheery*

*still cheery* You'll also probably be interested in this OOC thing about Milliways.

Welcome back! A rested and refreshed Rym is a good one to see.

HI!

John is evil, so you know.

Also I passed my orals. WHEE.

And I missed seeing you about online! Yay for productivity and reading, though.

If (for some reason) you plan on coming to Atlanta for DragonCon, there is this.

And then, there is this. Gramophone-tastic.

And I wrote this, and [livejournal.com profile] gramarye1971 wrote this in response.

And that is all I can think of at the moment. :D

Alas and woe, for I will be back on the West Coast by the time of the con.

Oh. Oh, Gwion. *sob*

I heard Beethoven's Ninth Symphony a week ago yesterday, at the outdoor concert hall where the Philadelphia Orchestra has its summer concert series. I'd never heard it live before, or I don't think I did, and anyway... anyway, this time, I listened. Heard the patterns coming before they came, heard the ... ineffable... never mind. Not being Gwion harper, nor even Bran Davies (student and sometime player of harp), I can't begin to describe it. But you two had it there.

Still reading chess metaphors. More squeefulness to come.

*pauses to select icon* I think I'll stick to my default this time. The world is quiet here.

Tying into that, Merriman and Wellard have been discussing British history -- all of it. ^_^

Welcome back! This week, I drummed, discovered that the caffeine in Excedrin Migraine does in fact keep you up if you take it at bedtime, heard a bunch of new theories on the headache (the PCP thinks it's a muscular contraction headache now rather than a migraine, which is good, because I've been avoiding cheese and chocolate for the past three weeks in the hopes that it would help), seen a Red Sox game (we lost :( :( :(), finished writing and almost finished editing the personal story I started while visiting you. And tomorrow is Pirates!

Oh lord. I am glad they don't think you have a migraine, but a muscular contraction headache that lasts ... how long now? I know you're over a year, but has it gotten to two? doesn't sound particularly pleasant to me. The drumming sounds good, the stories sound good, and Pirates sounds excellent. I appear to have acquired a minor character in Pirates to NPC, and I also appear to have crossed him over, in wacky timeline-altering hijinks, with a Georgette Heyer character. Long story. Enjoy movie, and watch out for the silent guy in front of the map.

...Which Heyer character?

Mmmm, the symptoms that he thinks are muscular contraction have only been in place about three months. The migraine portion of it is likely to still be so minimal as to be insignificant.

Actually, I haven't managed to read Dracula online, alas. I think I'll have to end up taking the book out of the library and reading it that way. So no LJ Les Liaisons for me.

Are the Temeraire books good? I was thinking of reading them, being a geek for the Napoleonic Wars, naval bits particularly.

The first one's fabulous. Novik has clearly trained her ear by reading vast quantities of CS Forester, not to mention by doing massive amounts of research, and she knows enough about the genres she's using to be able to play with the conventions. I heartily recommend it.

What did you think of The Book of Lights? (I must mention that it's one of my favorite Potok books.)

I'm not sure how to add links (I should learn one of these days). You can check out the haircut post. Other than that I think you're all caught up.
