(I'm writing about a young boy's death in The Youth's Companion. The story I am studying leaves no tear un-jerked. There are only so many ways to describe the narrative tone.)

"Lugubrious" is an excellent word. I'll use it in the next revision of my paper -- which, fortunately, I am writing now.
