I discovered, via Google News, that Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher just had a California Kabbalah wedding.

I made the mistake of clicking on the link.

On Saturday evening around 10pm, the brief, formal, top-secret ceremony was done in the Kabbalah tradition, an ancient spiritual practice which both Moore and Kutcher follow.

A "Kabbalah wedding" typically includes reading from the Zohar which is a 13th century Kabbalistic text. Seven traditional Jewish blessings, the sheva brachot are also included along with readings from Psalms.

Ancient spiritual practice my left earlobe.

All these shallow Hollywood types climbing on the Kabbalah bandwagon just make me shake my head. I wonder if Demi tied a red string around Ashton's penis. It wouldn't surprise me.

Will you raise the dead to perform the ceremony?

It's a very useful icon indeed, especially on days like these. Maybe I'll make myself a denial icon.

Ancient spiritual practice my left earlobe.

Depends on your frame of mind. In certain circles, anything more than ten years old qualifies as "ancient." (Pseudo-Kabbalah, which hadn't yet matured into Hollywood Kabbalah, did exist that far back.)

The sad thing is that I'm not sure Hollywood Kabbalah passes the ten-year test.

The key modifier here is "California." "California kabbalah" is as much like real kabbalah (any flavor) as, say, California rolls are like sashimi -- i.e., mostly harmless but exceedingly inauthentic.

D'you think they did the Zohar readings in Aramaic? If so, did they offer an English translation? And who did they get to pronounce it? Enquiring minds, y'know.

Well, if they were confused about the pronunciation, they should just have said the words in as many possibly pronunciations as they could think of. It could have been an exercise in permutations.

Or something.

An exercise in permutations would be way too scholarly. Instead, they should bill the multiple readings of the same word pronounced differently as incantations.

It would be a theological exercise in permutations, and thus one would need to pay for each permutation.

Your left earlobe is ancient spiritual practice? That's awesome. Can you bite it and get religious insights?

No, I cannot bite my left earlobe. I am not that flexible.

Now, if you hammer my earlobe to the door, I could be your slave forever. That's an ancient practice, if not a spiritual one.

Only works if you actually want to be [livejournal.com profile] fleurdelis28's slave.
