Instead of cleaning in panic for my parents' arrival in two hours, instead of hunting for lost objects and prepping for class, I have been reading the news online.

What in hell is this?

The Kansas attorney general has requested the full medical records of women who had abortions in abortion clinics, and I quote Attorney General Phill Kline, in order "to investigate and prosecute child rape and other crimes in order to protect Kansas children." Yes. Because the way to protect Kansas survivors of child rape is to terrify them out of getting abortions.

The clinics, of course, refused the request and brought their case to the Kansas Supreme Court.

I really hope the Kansas Supreme Court sees reason.

Legally, I'm not sure the issue has anything to do with abortion. Either you can scrutinize medical records in bulk for evidence that the subjects might have been the victim of some crime, or you can't. I really can't imagine you can; it's sort of a fundamental part of the Bill of Rights that you need to know specifically what you're hoping to find before you can go look. (Even the Patriot Act, broad as it is, isn't applicable -- is he arguing that he suspects that they were raped by terrorists?) The fact that this guy happens to be driven by a lightning-rod sort of issue shouldn't make any difference one way or another to the basic questionability of what he wants to do.

A contemporary American conservative worldview: Stop the government from interfering in the affairs of private business, and get the government interfering in peoples' private business(?)

And back in the good old days it was the liberals who thought that... I guess we all have our moments of weakness, though of course back then 'liberal' was used in a bit more of its classical sense.
