Greek lawyers are threatening to sue the Hollywood makers of the new film Alexander the Great for depicting the king as bisexual.

I never thought a film could get into trouble for too much historical accuracy.

Also, I have been promising various friends music for quite a while.

Isabella ~ Mediaeval Baebes
There is nothing medieval at all about this song, and very little that is medieval about the group. I like the song's (and the group's) not-quite-Goth, not-quite-techno, not-quite-New-Age, just-slightly-hypnotic aesthetic.

Democracy ~ Leonard Cohen
This song gives me hope, even in late November 2004.
It's coming from the sorrow in the street / the holy places where the races meet.

I believe they had to tone down the film version of Evita to get permission to film in Buenos Aires. People can be amazingly touchy about their national mythic figures, maybe because they symbolize so much more than what the person actually did. (Though in the case of Evita, I believe the peronistas were also still in power. But the Argentinean public seemed to feel the same way.)

I remember that now.

It's actually fascinating to me that Alexander the Great is still a mythic figure for modern Greeks, given the 2300 years since his empire. Eva Peron was at least alive this century.

What religion/ethnic culture do you belong to?! :P

Besides, the longer you've been dead, the harder it is for historians to establish conclusively that you drank yourself to death or consorted with Nazis.

Alexander strikes me as a pretty good candidate for mythic cultural figure...I'm more puzzled and impressed by the ability to conceive of him as nationalistically Greek.

But according to the book Dinner With Persephone, Greeks will tell you that if you see a gigantic immortal mermaid and she asks if Alexander the Great still lives, you have to say yes.

Forget I said anything... :)

I'll remember that about the immortal mermaid, though. Who wrote the book?

Can't remember, but a quick search should turn it up. There can't be that many books by that name.

With reference again to the homosexuality bit -- the NYTimes review points out that the only thing unusual about Alexander's sexual preferences, in light of the standards of the time, was that he slept with men his own age.

Um? Well, that gives me hope for the movie. Maybe it won't be awful.

I talked to her on the phone for about an hour yesterday, so I pretty much said what I had to say right at the moment.

You know, she never got the package with the cd we made for her. Can you make a new copy and bring it?

does this mean that the movie will be even more awful? if people threaten to sue each other already... bad omens, bad omens indeed.

It's possible. Then again, it can't be nearly as bad as King Arthur, so I'm not too worried.

I listen to Mediaeval Baebes when I really need to be hypnotized into getting homework done.
