From the Jewish News Weekly of Northern California:

“Lemony [Snicket]is quite openly Jewish,” says [Daniel] Handler in a phone interview. “We’re not trying to pull a Madeleine Albright here. Like anyone with Jewish ancestry and an over-educated world view, Lemony’s life is rife with misfortune.”

This explains quite a bit about the Unfortunate Events books, I must say.

By the way, The Grim Grotto, Snicket's (and Handler's) newest book, is quite an entertaining way to spend procrastinatory time. I direct you to this brilliant sentence, from a passage about the various job requirements for people interested in the villainous life:

Villains require a small group of villainous cohorts, who can be persuaded to serve the villain in a henchpersonal capacity.

I shall now repeat the word "henchpersonal" over and over again.

That is all.

Also, if any of you do not know the Series of Unfortunate Events, and even if you do, I just found a fanfic that perfectly captures the spirit of Snicket.

A snippet:
[I]f this story were to carry all the warnings it
should, it would be far, far longer than such a tale
of woe should ever be. It would need an "orphans in
terrible distress" warning, a "sharp, pointy objects"
warning and an "inconveniently placed puddle of mud"
warning – and that is only the beginning. So the only
warning you should heed is the warning to immediately
close this story and go to another LiveJournal post,
where happier people are telling stories of happier
days, perhaps the erotic adventures of two young pop
stars or the favored foods of certain housecats. In no
case should you read THIS terrible tale any further.

Wow. Fanfic isn't usually my cup of tea (a phrase which here means, 'something I enjoy reading,' not 'something I enjoy putting honey in'), but that was awesome :)

There is, very rarely, among the huge quantities of junk, some brilliantly voice-emulating fanfic out there. I haven't seen much that's as good as this one, though.

I think I started at [livejournal.com profile] 12am_nosh and went to [livejournal.com profile] kleio_the_muse and then to you....it was the Lemony Snicket that caught my attention, though.

Isn't it grand?

...That means that the Series of Unfortunate Events books are about a secret society in which some, if not most, of the leaders are Jewish! Clearly, the VFD is really the Jewish conspiracy!

It's a conspiracy all about reading long books and preventing the world from exploding, so it's not too bad as far as Jewish conspiracies go.

I couldn't not share the news that Lemony was a member of the tribe.
