I should probably be sleeping right now, but instead I am sorting my bookshelf. It's an excellent thing to be doing. So far, I've found at least six books that I'd forgotten that I owned and that will be extremely useful as my studying progresses.

I just discovered, hiding between The White Goddess and the A-text of Piers Plowman, a volume of early medieval Latin and Old Irish poetry from Ireland, complete with translations. (The translations are useful, as I don't actually read Old Irish. Yet.) On the off chance that some of you might possibly be interested in seeing what a passage from Patrick's Breastplate looks like in Old Irish, I'm posting a bit here.

And the fire with all the strength it hath and the lightning with its rapid wrath )

By the way, I think I was discussing possible dates for "Patrick's Breastplate" with a few of you ([livejournal.com profile] silveraspen and [livejournal.com profile] adiva_calandia, perhaps?). Carey claims that the poem originated around the eighth century, but the first extant copy is in a manuscript c. 1100.
